Volkswagen announced earlier this week that it was preparing to receive applications for its manufacturing plant that is scheduled to open in Chattanooga in 2011.
"This plant is only going to be 35 miles away," Bridgeport Mayor David Hughes said. "Everyone in the surrounding areas looking for work should come out and apply to take advantage of the services offered by the Alabama Career Center System and its staff. These jobs will be good, high paying jobs."
VW expects to employ 1,200 production workers at its facility. Workers will be involved in the production of a new mid-sized diesel sedan. Starting pay for the body and paint shop, welding and assembly jobs is expected to start at $14.50 per hour.
Forecasts indicate as many as 9,000 other jobs will be created to supply parts for the plant.
"I strongly encourage anyone looking to become a VW employee to come to our Mobile Center next week and submit their application," Kathy Evans, area manager for the system said. "We will have trained staff on hand that can help answer questions and make sure the application process goes smoothly."
In addition to the mobile Career Center, other area centers in Scottsboro, Fort Payne and Rainsville are prepared to offer assistance to VW job applicants. The centers are operated as part of Gov. Bob Riley's office of workforce development.
