Water Transportation

The navigable Tennessee River traverses Jackson County in a southwesterly direction offering a 9 ft. channel depth for economical shipments.  Both public and private use barge terminals are available for loading and off-loading timber, steel, coal, iron ore and other bulk products.  The Alabama State Port Authority has licensed inland ports in Bridgeport and nearby Huntsville.  The Port of Nickajack is 30 miles away. The Tennessee River is part of an interconnected waterway system which serves 21 states.  Through the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, barge shipments reach the deep-water port of Mobile in approximately 4 and a half days.


Public Ground Transportation

  • Persons/Local:  Vans for senior citizens and others are provided by the Rural Health Agency and Area Council on Aging.
     
  • Persons/Non-Local:  Bus service is provided by Continental Trailways.
     
  • Packages/Non-Local:  United Parcel Service and Federal Express provide daily package pick-up and delivery to nationwide destinations.  Local Post Offices in each community also provide express mail service.
